1.1 Introduction

Bangladesh is still a predominantly rural county. But it’s urban population is rising fast. This has mainly been due to poverty and disaster related migration from the rural areas. A major consequences of the surge in urban population is the rapid growth of slums and squatter settlements inhabited by poor people. According to a study by the centre for urban studies (2009) roughly 35% of the urban population lives in slums, with a population density of 531,000 persons per square mile. According to a BBS survey carried out in 2010, there are 2,991 slums in the country.

The problem of access to education faced by slum dwellers are fundamental. There are substantial areas lacking access to any govt. school and which are too poor for even the lowest cost private provider urban migration is exacerbating the problem. The proportion of child are ‘silently excluded from education, meaning that they attend infrequently, repeat years of schooling and have poor achievement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The urban poor, who live in slums are among the group worst served by the education system in Bangladesh. Over two millions Bangladeshi children live in the slums. Every child has right to education. But these slum children have little or no access to basic education. Although primary education has been declared free and compulsory, many parents cannot afforded to send their children to schools due to financial and social factors.

In this research, we are going to discuss about the access to education in the slums. This research will try to assess the status of primary education of the children living in slums. Education is the backbone of sustainable development. Education stimulates and empowers people to participate in their own development. A plan for sustainable development must address the issue of education because it plays a critical role not only in expanding further educational opportunities, but also in fostering basic intellectual abilities such as literacy that are crucial to success in a world where power is closely linked with knowledge. Primary education must receive a great amount of attention in developing nations for this reason. But t he problem of access to education faced by slum dealers are fundamental. That is why, I think their status of primary education is an important issue on which research can be done.

1.3 Research Objectives

This research was embarked upon with a certain set of objectives such as:

1. To assess what access to primary education the slum children have

2. To ascertain the availability of primary schools in the chosen area and thus establish whether or not there exists a supply of primary education.

3. To find out the barriers preventing a maximum impact on primary education and the lives of slum children

4. To identify the factors behind the drop out problem exists in the slum

5. To find out the measures in primary education improve the condition of slum children.

1.4 Significance of the Research

As the major objective of this research is to assess the access of slum children in primary education, it is basically conducted with the status of primary education of slum children. This study will help us to understand comprehensively the state of education in the slum and diagnosis problem if any. It is hoped that this study shed light on the prevailing conditions and create awareness about the need for necessary steps in the primary education sector.

1.5 Variables

There are two types of variables- dependent and independent. In this research, the primary education status of slum children is the dependent variable. As it can be changed due to several factors i.e. access to education, learning methods and facilities, consciousness of parents, economic condition, living condition, etc. these are the independent variables. The independent variables influence the dependent variable which provides some outcomes.

1.6 Selection of Research Method and Data Collection Technique

There are three approaches in research methodology. They are qualitative, quantitative and mixed approach. This research have been conducted the mixed approach, as the data will be collected from both primary and secondary sources of materials. Both open and close-ended questions have been used in this research to collect the data required.

Primary data have been collected through interview by using questionnaire. Secondary sources i.e. published books, research reports, official documents, journal articles, and newspaper have been used to collect data. Relevant data have also been collected through Internet browsing.

1.7 Sampling Frame and Sample Size

There are different types of sampling such as-simple random sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling etc. In this study, we have been followed the process of simple random sampling. The samples have been selected from a specific slum situated in Rajshahi City Corporation. About 30 households from that slum have been selected to find out the research objectives on a random basis.

ABSTRACT

Bangladesh is still a predominantly rural country, but its urban population is rising fast. The urban poor, especially those who live in slums, are among the groups worst served by the education system in Bangladesh. Over two million Bangladeshi children live in the slums. Although every child has a right to education and primary education has been declared free and compulsory; these slum children have little or no access to basic education.

Considering the overall educational situation in slum, an attempt has been made in this study entitled “Status of Primary Education in a Slum of Rajshahi City”; to know the scenario of education of slum children and how families in slums make decisions about schooling, how these decisions related to their economic, social and migration background and to their aspirations and expectations concerning their children’s futures.
