Bangladesh is a riverine country. There are 260 indigenous freshwater bony fish species, suitable for human consumption, belonging to 145 genera and 55 families, constitute a very rich aquatic bio-diversity in Bangladesh (Craig et al. 2004). Fish alone supplies about 60% of animal protein intake (Ahmed et al. 1997).
