Men were exchanged with others from the ancient time. His main aim is to communicate with others by exchange. As a result of exchanging with others, banking system was formed. And thus people can easily deposit money, to the Bank for there future life. When he is in suffering he can collect his money/Cash from the Bank.
The central Bank of Bangladesh is known as the central Bank of Bangladesh. A central bank, reserve bank or monetary authority is a banking institution. Bangladesh Bank is both the Government’s banker and the tanker of other commercial Bank. The function of commercial Bank can not be described any words. Money market control, Foreign exchange control, clearing house, act, as an ad vision assist to collect credit’ audit of account etc.
Classification of Banking System
A modern commercial Banking system is forming in Bangladesh day by day like other countries. The Classification of banking system is given below-
1. State owned commercial Bank
2. Local private commercial bank
3. Foreign commercial Bank
4. Specialized Bank
Now, firstly we have to know/learn about the stale owned commercial bank. Mainly these are governed by the Government of Bangladesh.
(1) State owned Commercial Bank
There are four state owned commercial Bank in Bangladesh. These are given below
Sonali Bank
Sonali Bank is the largest state owned commercial bank of Bangladesh. It started its commercial working since 1972. Formerly it was knowa as the National Bank of Pakistan, Bank of Bahalpur Limited etc. The Bank has a board of Directors comprising of 7 members. The Board is headed by the chairman. Its head office is located at motijhil. The bank operates its function through its 1291 branches. Among these 421 branches defected to town. 868 branches to urban area and kolkata and Agartola. There are three (3) offices in Jedda, Riyad and Kuet. There are also 317 office in abroad. The main functions of this Bank is collections of deposit loan issue payment of money against cheaque, discount of bill, transfer of money. Assist in foreign trade etc.
Janata Bank
Janata Bank is the second largest state owned commercial bank of Bangladesh. The Bank was established on 26 March 1972 Formally. The Bank is known as the united Bank Limited and the Union Bank Limited. Janata Bank has an authorized capital of Tk 800 crore, The Bank is governed by 7 assembly Board. The board is headed by chairman and other member are elected by the Government, The chairman is known as M.D The head Office of this Bank is situated at Motijhil. The Bank is inherited 15 Area office, 5 district office, and 31 regional office over the rest of the country. The numbers of corporate office are 49. The total number of this bank is 896 (2002)
Agrani Bank
The Agrani Bank is one of the state owned commercial Bank in Bangladesh. Establishment of this bank in 1972. After independence the bank is known as Habib bank Limited and the commerce bank Limited. The authorized capital of take 800 and paid-up capital of taka 248.82 crore. The bank is governed by 7 brand member. The headed of the board is chairman. The head office is situated at Motijhil. There are 6 circle offices, 10 corpora office and 53 regional offices over the rest of the country. The total number of this bank stood at 903 (Data 2002).
Rupali Bank
The Rupali Bank is another state owned commercial bank in Bangladesh. It stated its function in 1972. It is formerly known as Muslim commercial. The standard Bank limited etc. The Bank has authorized capital of Tk 700 crore and paid up capital of Tk 125 crore. There are 7 board members to govern the bank. Numbers of 6 are elected by Govt. and other is elected by private owned. The total number of this bank stood at 514 (Data 15 May, 2002). There are 4 Chief electoral offices, 25 regional office and 5 corporate offices.
(2) Local Private Commercial Bank
There are 30 local private commercial Bank in Bangladesh. These are given below-
Pubali Bank Limited
The Govt. of Bangladesh declared as a Pubali Bank Limited trough the eastern Markentail Bank Limited in 1972. It is one of the commercial Bank in the country. On August 1959, it was first established as a Bengali Bank. The head office of the bank was Chittagon. At present the head office is situated at Dhaka. It was privatized on 30 June 1984. The total number of this bank was 350 since 2004. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 500 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 20 crore. The bank was governed 15 comprising board member. The chairman is the headed of the board. The main objectives of this bank are to issue the loan to the people and business man.
Uttora Bank Limited
The bank was established on 26 March, 1972 by the commandment of the Govt. Next on 30 June, 1983 the bank was privatized. It started its banking functions with authorized capital of 20 crore. The bank has paid-up capital of Tk 9.98,32,400 since 2002. The bank was governed the 15 board member. The bead office of this bank is situated at Motijhil the total branched of this bank was 198 since en 30 March, 2002.
Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited
Islamic Bank is a financial institution whose statutes rules and procedures expressly state its commitment of the principles of Islamic Shariat and not to the banking of the receipt and payment of interest on any of its operations. It was established on 30 March, 1983. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 100 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 68 crore. The total branches of this bank were 121 since on 30 March, 2002. It was governed by 24 comprising of board member, among of them there are one president whom is Bangladesh and 8 foreign chairmen. The main objectives of this bank are to launch interest less banking system.
Arab Bangladesh Bank Limited
Arab Bangladesh Bank is another local private commercial bank of Bangladesh. The Bank was established on April 12, 1982. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 800 crore and the paid-up capital and reserve fund of Tk 471 and 543 respectively. The total branches of this bank stood at 70 since 2004. The main objectives of this bank are to issue the loan.
National Bank Limited
National Bank Ltd was established and 23 march 1983. The authorized capital of this bank is Tk 1000 crore and paid-up capital and reserve fund of Tk 430 and 1332 crore respectively. The bank inherited 76 branches over the rest of the country.
The City Bank
Establishment of this bank on 27 March, 1983. The authorized capital of this Bank is Tk 400 crore and paid-up capital and reserve found is Tk 240 and 817 respectively. The total branches of this bank were 77 overtherest of the country.
IFIC International Finance Investment and Commerce Bank Limited
The Bank was established in 1983. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 500 crore. The bank has paid-up capital and reserve fund of Tk 406 and 406 respectively. Branches of this bank were 62.
United Commercial bank Limited
Establishment of this Bank on 29 June, 1983. The authorized capital of this bank is of Tk 1000 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 230 crore. The bank has also reserve fund of Tk 858 crore. Total numbers of benches were 80.
The Oriented Bank Limited
The Oriented Bank Limited was formerly known as Al-Baraka Bank Bangladesh Limited It was established on 20 May, 1987. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 2000 and paid-up capital and reserve fund is of Tk 517 and 80 crore respectively. The total branch was 34.
Eastern Bank Limited
The Eastern Bank was established on August, 1992. The authorized capital of this Bank is of Tk 1000 crore and paid-up capital and reserve fund stood at 828 and 1493 crore respectively. The number of branch was 22.
National Credit and Commerce Bank Limited
Establishment of this bank was on 17 May, 1993. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 750 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 552. The bank has reserve fund is of Tk 429 crore. The total branch of this bank is 32.
Prime Bank Limited
Establishment of this bank was on 12 March, 1995. The authorized capital of this Bank of Tk 2500 crore. It has also paid-up capital and reserve fund of Tk 564 and 770 crore respectively. Numbers of branches were 26.
South-East Bank
Establishment of this bank was on 12 March, 1995. The authorized capital of this Bank of Tk. 2500 crore. It has also paid-up capital and reserve fund of Tk. 564 and 770 crore respectively. Numbers of branches were 26.
Dhaka Bank Limited
This is one of the local Private commercial Bank of Bangladesh. It was established on 5 July, 1995. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 1000 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 531 crore. The total number branches were 24 over the rest of the country.
Al-Arafah Islami Bank Limited
Establishment of this Bank 27 September 1995. The authorized capital of Tk 1000 croe and paid-up capital of Tk 506. numbers of branch were 24 since 2004.
Social Investment Bank Limited
The bank was established on 22 November, 1995. The authorized capital of this bank of Tk 1000 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 260 crore. Reserve fund stood at 606 crore. Number of branch was 24.
Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited
Establishment of this Bank was 3 June, 1996. The bank has authorized capital of Tk 400 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 202 crore. Reserve fund was 304. Total branch was 19. The main objectives of this firm are to help the poor students to carry on their studies by giving money.
Marchentil Bank Limited
The bank was launched its commercial activities an 2 June, 1999. The authorized capital of this bank is of Tk 1200 crore and paid-up capital is of Tk 799 crore. Reserve fund was of Tk 639 crore. Total number of branch was 22.
Standard bank Limited
Establishment of this bank was or 3 June 1999. The total numbers of branches are 17.
One Bank Limited
The one Bank was established on July 1999. The authorized capital of Tk 1200 crore. Number of branches are 14.
Export-Import Bank of Bangladesh Ltd.
Establishment since August 3, 1999. The authorized capital is of TK 1000 cr4ere and paid up capital TK 1048 crore. Number of branches are 20.
Bangladesh commercial Bank Limited
Date of establishment was on 13 March 1997. It has authorized capital and paid-up capital of TK 2000 and 920 crore respectively. Total numbers of branches were 32 over the rest of the country.
Mutual Trust Bank Limited
The bank was established on 24 October 1999. '1 he bank has authorized capital of TK 1000 crore and paid-up capital and reserve fund 720 and 434 crore respectively. Total branches were 14 since 2004.
First Security Bank Limited
The day of establishing of this bank was on 28 October 1999. The authorized the capital of TK 1000 crore. The paid-up and reserve fund of TK 640 and 60 crore respectively. The total numbers of branches were 12.
BRAC Bank Limited
The bank is working specially in the urban area. It issued loan lo poor landless fanner, giving loan to the poor women established on 4 July 20U1. It staled with and paid-up capital of TK 655 crore. The total branches of this bank were 10 over the rest of the country.
Jomuna Bank Limited
Establishment of this Bank on 3 June 2001. I the authorized capital of TK 1600 crore and paid-up capital of TK 390 crore. Total branches were 10.
The Trust Bank Limited
It started its commercial activities on May, 1999. Before starting the banking the activities it inherited the authorized capital of TK 1000 crore and paid-up and reserve fund of TK 500 and 25 crore respectively. The numbers of branches were 16 since 2004.
The Premier Bank Limited
The bank was established on. 26 October, 1999. The bank has authorized capital of TK 1000 crore. It has also paid-up capital and reserve fund of TK 818 and 130 crore respectively 20 branches of this bank is working through out the country.
Bank Asia Limited
Bank Asia Ltd started its commercial activities on 27 November, 1999. It has authorized capital of TK 1200 crore and paid-up capital of TK 600 crore. 15 branches are working throughout the country.
Shajalal Islami Bank Limited
Establishment of this Bank on 10 May, 2001. The bank has authorized capital of TK 800 crore. It has also paid-up capital and reserve fund of TK 461 and 155 crore respectively. Number of branches arc 10 over the rest of the country.
(3) Foreign Commercial Bank
There are 10 foreign commercial Bank through out the country. The following banks are the foreign commercial Dank working in Bangladesh.
American Express Bank Limited
The Bank started its commercial activities in 1996. It has no authorized capital but It has paid-up capital of TK 1003 crore. It has 03 branches working in the country.
Standard Chartered Bank
Standard chartered Bank was established in 1948. This is one of the oldest foreign commercial bank in Bangladesh. The bank has paid-up capital of TK 846 crore. There are 18 branches of this bank.
Habib Bank Limited
The bank was established on 19 July. 1976. After having independence the bank expressed as a private foreign commercial Bank in Bangladesh. The paid-up capital of TK 373 crore. It has 02 branches working in the country.
State Bank of India
This the second oldest foreign commercial bank in Bangladesh. It was established on 5 May, 1975. The total paid-up capital of TK 840 crore. It has 2 branches working through out the country.
Commercial Bank of Sillon Limited
This is the new foreign commercial Bank of Bangladesh. It was established on 6 November. 2004. The Bank formerly known as the Indo-suez Bank. The paid-up capital of TK 1368 crore. It has 02 branches winking in the country.
National Bank of Pakistan
The bank was established on 31 August, 1994.It has paid-up capital of TK 735 crore. The bank has 2 branches working in the country.
City Bank N.A.
The bank expressed it self as a foreign commercial bank on 26 June, 1995. It has paid-up capital and reserve fund of TK 845 and 488 crore respectively. It has 3 branches working in the country since 2004.
Orry Bank
The Bank was formerly known as the Hanvit Bank. It was established on 7 October, 2002. The bank has paid-up capital and reserve found of TK 873 and 1391 crore respectively. It has only 1 branch working in the country.
The Hongkong and Sanghai Banking Corporation
The bank was established on 17 December, 1990. It has on authored capital. It inherited paid-up capital of TK 1140 crore. The bank has 4 branches.
Samil Bank of Bahrain E.C.
The bank was formerly known as the Islamic Bankers. It was established on august 1997.The paid-up capital of TK 490 crore. It has only 1 branch.
(4) Specialized Bank
There are 5 Specialized Bank working in the Bangladesh. The following banks are the specialized bank of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Krishi Bank
Bangladesh Krishi Bank has been established under the Bangladesh Krishi Bank order 1973 (President’s order on 27 of 1973) BKB is a Banking company under the Banking Company ACT 1991. The Bank is guided in accordance. With the policies and principles of the Govt. BKB has on authorized capital of TK 200 crore and paid-up capital of TK 2500 crore. The Bank has 939 branches since 2004. The main objectives of this bank are to provide credit facilities to the farmers for the development of the agriculture. The Board has a Board of comprising 11 members.
Rajshahi Krishi Unnoyon Bank (RAKUB)
RAKUB was established for the development of the agriculture of the Northern region means Rajshahi Division on 15 March, 1987. The head office is located at Rajshahi. The main objective of this bank is to give loan to the farmers of northern region for agriculture activities and enhancing the development of agriculture. The total brandies were 349 since 2004. The Board of comprising 7 members the headed of the board is known as MD.
Bangladesh Shilpo Bank (BSB)
The Bank working for the development of industry of the country is known as shilpo Bank. The Bank has been established under the Bank of 1972 (President’s order 129 of 1972). The Bank has authorized capital of TK 200 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 132 crore. The main objectives of this bank is to issue the short run and long run credit both public and private industries. The head office is located in Dhaka. The total branches were 15. The Board is comprising of a members elected by the (Govt.).
Bangladesh Shilpo RIN Songstha
BSRS was established under the BSRS order 1972 (President’s order 128 of 1972). The main objectives of this bank is to encourage the industries for giving loan, capital investment and overall the development of industry. The head office is situated at Kouran Bazar. The Bank has authorized capital of 200 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 70 crore since 2004. The numbers of branches were 2 since 2004.
BASIC Bank Limited
The Bank was established on 11 January, 1989. It has authorized capital of Tk 2000 crore and paid-up capital of Tk 675 crore. The total branches were 26 over the rest of the country since 2004.
